This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you use our mobile application and related services. Given the nature of our Service, we collect and process sensitive personal information, including precise location data. We are committed to protecting your privacy while providing you with safety tools.
1. Information We Collect
Information You Provide Directly
- Account Information: Apple ID identifier, display name, email address (may be Apple Private Relay), phone number (optional), profile photo (optional), home address (optional)
- Group Information: Group names, descriptions, membership, and settings
- Communications: Messages, photos, videos, voice messages, reactions, and emergency contact information
- Safety Session Information: Destinations, routes, expected arrival times, check-in responses, date mode details, SOS alert information
Information Collected Automatically
- Device Information: Device type, model, OS version, unique identifiers, push notification tokens, app version, battery level during safety sessions
- Location Information: Precise GPS coordinates, accuracy metrics, altitude, speed, heading, timestamp, location mode (passive, walking home, SOS)
- Usage Information: Features used, session duration, interaction with notifications, error logs, crash reports
2. How We Use Your Information
Core Service Functionality
- Verify your identity and maintain your account
- Create, manage, and facilitate communication within safety circles
- Display your location to group members when you enable sharing
- Track your journey during safety sessions ("Walking Home," "Watch Me," "Date Mode")
- Immediately notify your group members and share your location during SOS emergencies
- Send reminders and process safety check-in confirmations
- Detect when you arrive at specified destinations via geofencing
Other Uses
- Analyze usage patterns to improve features and fix bugs
- Detect, prevent, and address fraud, abuse, and security issues
- Send push notifications about safety events and messages
- Comply with applicable laws and respond to legal requests
3. How We Share Your Information
With Your Group Members
The core purpose of WeGotYou is to share safety information with your trusted contacts. When you use the Service:
- Your location is shared with members of groups where you have enabled location sharing
- Messages you send are visible to all members of the respective group
- When you start a safety session, your group members can see your status, location, destination, and expected arrival time
- Emergency SOS alerts are immediately broadcast to all members of your groups, including your precise location
YOU CONTROL WHAT YOU SHARE: You can choose which groups to share your location with, and you can disable location sharing at any time through the App settings.
Service Providers
We share information with third-party service providers who perform services on our behalf:
- Amazon Web Services (AWS): Cloud hosting, data storage, media storage
- MongoDB Atlas: Database hosting
- Apple: Authentication (Sign in with Apple)
- Firebase/Google: Push notifications
Legal Requirements
We may disclose your information if required by law or in response to valid legal process, government requests, or to protect legal rights and safety.
EMERGENCY DISCLOSURE: In cases where we believe there is an imminent threat to life or safety, we may disclose location and user information to law enforcement or emergency services without prior notice or consent.
4. Location Data
Location sharing is fundamental to WeGotYou's safety features. We want you to understand exactly how we handle this sensitive information.
Types of Location Collection
- Passive Location Sharing: Updates approximately every 1-5 minutes depending on movement, battery-efficient
- Active Location Tracking (Safety Sessions): High-accuracy, frequent updates (every 5-15 seconds) during "Walking Home," "Watch Me," or similar modes
- SOS Emergency Mode: Highest priority, most frequent location updates until alert is resolved
Location Sharing Controls
You have complete control over location sharing:
- Enable or disable location sharing for each group individually
- Disable all location sharing through App settings
- You choose when to start and end active safety sessions
- You can see exactly which groups have access to your location
Location Data Retention
- Real-time location data: Automatically deleted after 24-48 hours
- Session location history: Retained for 7 days after session completion
- SOS location history: Retained for 90 days for safety and legal purposes
- No permanent location history: We do not maintain long-term location tracking databases

When you delete your account, your profile information is immediately anonymized, your messages are retained but attributed to "Deleted User," your location data is deleted within 48 hours, and backup copies are purged within 90 days.

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your information:
- TLS/SSL encryption for all data in transit
- Encryption at rest for stored data
- Secure authentication via Sign in with Apple
- JWT tokens with short expiration and refresh rotation
- Rate limiting to prevent abuse
- Regular security audits and vulnerability assessments
- Cloud hosting with SOC 2 certified providers
While we strive to protect your information, no method of transmission over the Internet or electronic storage is 100% secure. We cannot guarantee absolute security.
7. Your Privacy Rights
- Access and Portability: Access the personal information we hold about you and request a copy in a portable format
- Correction: Update or correct your profile information through the App
- Deletion: Delete your account through the App settings or contact us
- Restriction and Objection: Restrict processing or object to certain processing activities

8. Children's Privacy
WeGotYou is not intended for children under 13 years of age (or 16 in the European Economic Area). We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under these ages.
If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal information without your consent, please contact us immediately. We will take steps to delete such information.
9. California Privacy Rights (CCPA)
If you are a California resident, you have additional rights under the California Consumer Privacy Act:
